What is it?

The Independent Living Program and Housing Project database is an online, one stop resource for independent living and housing programs for individuals with disabilities from across the United States. This database – which was inspired by the difficulty the staff of M&L Special Needs Planning had while trying to find reliable, relevant and current housing information – is meant to help families save time, frustration, and money as they attempt to find independent living and housing options for their family members with special needs.

Why Should I Sign Up?

The database has a number of extremely useful features. To begin, M&L staff has compiled information on independent living programs and housing options from across the United States – this information includes program descriptions, contact information, eligibility requirements, and funding options. M&L staff are in constant contact with the owners and operators of these programs, therefore all of the information in the database will be current.  Individuals who subscribe to this database will be notified of any changes/updates, etc. as they happen – ensuring the peace of mind that comes from knowing that the information on which you are basing your decisions is current and reliable.

In addition to the information on these independent living programs and housing options, the database will also contain contact information and descriptions of various service providers, advocates, and other special needs organizations. And, all the information is organized and categorized by state. This valuable, time saving feature ensures that families can quickly access information that is relevant to them, and can easily compare state housing resources.

As well as details on the independent living programs, and services providers, advocates and special needs organizations, the database will also include other valuable information that we think is relevant and will be helpful to you as your search for housing options. This information includes things such as current housing news/articles, so you can stay up-to-date on the housing issues for individuals with disabilities and housing developments from across the US. We have added studies, reports, and journal articles to keep you abreast of any medical research or developments that may affect the way you search for housing, or the housing options that you are considering for your family member. Our resource section will contain links to resources that can affect your family and family member with special needs. In short – this database will include any information that we come across or research (and verify) that we feel will benefit or help you as you attempt to find affordable and accessible housing for your family member with special needs.

As one final feature, the database will also include information that isn’t strictly related to housing: Maedi Tanham Carney, CFP®, CWIC, M&L Special Needs Founder and Owner, has created a series of informative videos that describe some of the essential steps to planning for the future of your child with special needs. These videos cover topics such as The Special Needs Planning Process, the government benefits Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Social Security Income (SSI), life insurance, and trusts, among many others. These videos will be released periodically, and subscribers to the database will be notified as it happens.

In short, we feel you should sign up for this service for one simple reason: in our many years of personal and professional experience with finding housing options for individuals with special needs, the biggest barrier we have come across is the limited access to information – and when the information is accessible, it is often not trustworthy. By creating this database, we have done the research for you, saving you time, energy, and frustration – none of which you have to spare.
