2016: M&L Year in Review
Thursday, December 29, 2016
Hello everyone, and welcome to our blog today! From all of us here at M&L, Happy Holidays! We hope that you are enjoying a relaxing and joyous holiday season with family and friends.
As the past year draws to a close, we would like to take the opportunity to reflect on our accomplishments in 2016 – _we are proud and grateful to report that it has been a very productive and successful year at M&L Special Needs Planning, LLC. We would also like to think about how we can continue to improve, expand, and serve the disability community in the upcoming New Year.
2016 Successes & Goals for 2017
Here at M&L Special Needs Planning, we are committed to educating families in an emphatic, methodical, non-threatening way. We do this by providing workshops and creating financial security with comprehensive life plans and government benefit counseling for the individual with special needs, as well as siblings and parents. This past year, we have been privileged to work with a number of new families, helping them plan for successful futures.
Government Benefit Counseling
Our government benefit counseling service is one of the most popular tools in our financial planning toolkit. Through the expertise and experience of our owner/founder Maedi Tanham Carney, CFP®, CWIC, M&L Special Needs Planning works with clients to ensure that they understand which public resources are available to them and their family member with special needs. We also help our clients access these funds by offering step by step guidance through the application process. We are very proud to announce that 2016 has been another banner year for this service; we can report an incredibly high success rate of helping clients apply for and receive benefits. To learn more or to inquire about this service, please contact us.
Comprehensive Special Needs Financial Life Plan
Our Comprehensive Special Needs Financial Life Plan is another one of our most popular services. This plan works to benefit the entire family scenario, including identifying the resources and assets necessary to provide for and protect the individual with disability, both now and when the family can no longer provide for him or her. This type of life planning is updated annually, incorporating any changes with family dynamics, state/federal benefits and what additional resources could be necessary to continue creating quality of life for the care plan recipient. In 2016, M&L worked with a number of families, to help them prepare for a financially stable and prosperous future for the individual with disabilities, the caregivers, and the family as a whole.
Integrated Living Opportunities
In 2016, M&L staff spent many hours investing in the growth and success of our community-building non-profit Integrated Living Opportunities (ILO). ILO is a 501c3-registered charity that helps adults with disabilities create full lives by creating intentional communities that facilitate networks of support for the ILO self-advocates. These networks of support enable ILO self-advocates to live as integrated members of the community. We are very proud to say that ILO has had an exceptional year of growth, helping self-advocates realize dreams and achieve independent living. One of our major goals for 2017 is to continue to improve on our commitment to maintaining a website that is focused on educating families as to the ins and outs of special needs planning, providing valuable information on related issues, and connecting families with services that can help them on their journey. As a part of this commitment, we have hired new website administrators and will work to improve our website over the coming months.
In addition to this, we plan to present a number of workshops over the next 12 months, beginning with our most popular: Understanding SSI/Medicaid & SSDI/Medicare. This workshop will take place Tuesday, January 24, 2017, at the Treatment and Learning Center in Rockville, MD. To register for this workshop, follow this link. To learn more about our workshop series, visit our Workshops web page.
M&L staff will continue to commit to helping ILO grow and improve as we build integrated, intentional communities for adults with disabilities. To learn more about ILO, including their upcoming New Futures Initiative™ training taking place in the new year, please visit ILO’s website www.ilonow.org.
